About Green Walls
We all know plants filter air – but how is that actually done? A NASA scientist (you gotta love those guys!) studied the process in the hopes of utilizing it to eventually filter air for astronauts living in space.
What he discovered is that, on a very small scale around each house plant he tested, a process called bio-remediation was occurring in the soil.
Bio-remediation is a natural process that occurs every day in nature all around the world. This a process where the microbes in the soil around the roots of the plant actually absorb and eat what we would consider contaminants in the air. Formaldehyde, Ammonia, etc. – there are naturally occurring microbes that live around the soil of plants that eat these VOCs. It’s not actually the plants filtering the air – it’s the microbial community surrounding the plants roots.
